The Witching Hour

Six cats were outside his house meowing banshee-like
as if singing a dirge for a cat that died of old age
he had to bury

by coincidence, it was 12am, which gave the scene
an eerie vibe, like out of a horror movie

he was just a kid, so it kind of scared him, even
though he knew the cats couldn’t harm him

the 12am witching hour was a little too coincidental
but at least no witches appeared that night and
none of the cats turned into one.

Adaptation

Sometimes it seems many humans
can adapt to almost anything
bad news, heart breaks, serious health conditions
wars, deaths, poverty, misfortune
some seem to adapt better than others
genetics, psychologies, better physical and mental health
maybe it comes down to luck
born more adaptable than most
what would break others, leaves a lucky one unbroken.

A Hell in Buddhism

I was surprised to learn
there’s a hell in Buddhism
I thought hell was exclusive
to Christianity

never thought Buddhism
would have a hell

but then I read a distinct
difference

unlike Christianity
the Buddhist hell is not
eternal.

Bob Boyd

“A naraka differs from the concept of hell in Christianity in two respects: firstly, beings are not sent to Naraka as the result of a divine judgment or punishment; secondly, the length of a being’s stay in a naraka is not eternal, though it is usually incomprehensibly long.
A being is born into naraka as a direct result of its accumulated actions (karma) and resides there for a finite period of time until that karma has achieved its full result. After its karma is used up, it will be reborn in one of the higher worlds as the result of karma that had not yet ripened.”

Where Poor is Poor

Poor in America
can mean a car
cable tv
rental and heat
assistance
food stamps
food banks
medicaid health insurance
help from social services
in some third world
countries
one doesn’t
get all those benefits
poor is poor
compared to
living here
but sad it is
that anyone anywhere
lives in poverty
often born into it
often nearly
impossible to get
out of it
trapped in a
caste system
or something
comparable.

Reptilian Eyes

He had eyes like a reptile’s
not exactly the same
but something about them
seemed reptilian
seemed not human
he wondered if the eyes
were truly the windows
of the soul
what was hidden behind
those reptilian eyes
unfortunately, his suspicions
held true
when one day those eyes
revealed the hidden
reptilian alien within
and those were the
last eyes, reptilian
or otherwise,
he ever saw.

The Dragoness

She’s always nice
always sweet
always polite
never unkind
never mean
but if you push
things too far
with her
by being too
unkind or mean
watch out
take cover
you will arouse
the dragoness
hidden in
her depths
you will see
it in her eyes
a glaring flash
like lightning
feel it in your
mind and
your marrow
shock and
sudden terror
and you will rue
the day you
aroused it.

Spoon Feed Them

Spoon feed them
make them believe
anything they are fed
who cares about truth
just feed them lies
and disinformation
feed them those
lies and disinformation
over and over and over
like chanting a mantra
sinking it into the mind
and watch with glee
and with satisfaction
how easily they are duped.

Too Many Good People Get Murdered in This World

Too many good people get murdered in this world
I see this all the time in true crime shows and the news
for example, a good wife or a good husband
murdered by their evil spouse for insurance money
or for the custody of their children
a young woman randomly raped and murdered
an innocent, good child caught in a crossfire of
a drive by shooting accidentally shot dead
all good people murdered, all good people dead
and I cannot understand why in this world
a presumably loving God allows this to happen.

A High Spiritual Being

I once met a woman who told me
what happened when her father died
she said at his funeral she felt
what she said was his spirit’s energy
flooding the entire funeral parlor
similar to how a guru’s spiritual energy
floods an entire ashram room and more
upon hearing her account of her father
I surmised he must have been a high
spiritual being, evident in life or not.

Were the Many Gods and Goddesses Invented or Revealed?

Sometimes I wonder if individuals
in different places, times and cultures
invented the many gods and goddesses
all across the peopled planet
promoted them to the point
others began believing in them
accepted them as real
felt moved to worship them
in other words, like fake news
many people believed
the imaginative, fake stories
of gods and goddesses

of course, the other possibility is
visionaries, knowers of the unknown
seers of the unseen
could have been chosen
by gods and goddesses
as worthy to be revealed to
revealed and manifested
real and genuine

I have to admit I like
the second version better
the genuine instead of
the imagined
but I tend to believe
that it’s plausible
the Absolute
in Its infinite mercy
would honor the beliefs
the ones imagined
and they eventually
would become real
conduits to the Divine.

Some Broken Hearts Never Heal

An engineer lost his wife in 1963
she unexpectedly died
at the age of 40
heartbroken, he couldn’t go on
with life as usual
he sold their house and
his belongings
quit his high paying job
became a vagabond
wandered all over the US
his way of trying to heal himself
mending his heart
that broke into a thousand pieces
trying to put those pieces
back together again
his wandering ended 5 years later when
he jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge
some broken hearts never heal.

The World Needs More People Who Kid Around

The world needs more people who kid around
fun people with sprinkles and sparkles of joy
who light up this world with a little merriment
lightheartedness in all the doom and gloom
interjecting healing, joyful laughter into it
oh how we need more of those people in this
world sometimes called the veil of tears
where like torrents of rain tears often fall.

The Costs of Risking Your Heart

Sometimes love goes well, sometimes not,
sometimes it’s deadly

a guy gives his heart to a
woman he thinks is his soulmate

a year later she cheats on him
and leaves him

a woman gives her heart to a bad boy
she liked the excitement and the challenges

two years later after much physical abuse
he beats her to death

a guy gives his heart to a sweet woman
a few months later, the sweetness is gone

he strays in the relationship hoping it will improve
but she keeps making his life miserable

a woman gives her heart a man with a lot of money
tells everybody she knows she got a great catch

but to him she’s just a trophy and a conquest
he’s incapable or real, true love

luckiest are those who despite the risks to their hearts
find true love that lasts for the rest of their lives.
