I hadn’t seen her in 50 years
and couldn’t believe
what I saw
compared to how I remembered her
when she was young and beautiful
cruel Time had annihilated her
youth and her beauty
reduced her to a sexless
old lady barely getting around
with her hands on a walker
I couldn’t believe the difference
between the young beauty she was
and the old nondiscript old woman
she had become
and I hated what Time and aging
had done to her

It saddens me how age erases a woman’s beauty. Sometimes so much you cannot tell how beautiful a woman was in her youth. To me, it seems cruel that this, like flowers that fade, happens to all women. But I take heart when I read of Near Death Experiences where when an old woman is clinically dead and in the afterlife, she becomes young again. So if these experiences are authentic, maybe death redeems a woman’s beauty, and she stays beautiful forever. And maybe if a woman wasn’t blessed with beauty in this life she is blessed with it in the afterlife. I like the idea of that.
